Oh no! I was just about to post on the blog, looked at what others had posted, and saw that Lee had already posted roughly the same idea as my first concept!
:(
Role 1: In the light, the animal is a fluffy, cute koala, for example--a very normal, very cute stuffed animal. It's the stuffed animal that we all love to hug and cuddle with.
Role 2: In the dark, the animal becomes something of a demon night light, with pulsing red eyes. It scares us a bit, and wards off any competing demons.
Look and Feel: Cute and cuddly by day, demon by night!
Implementation: The following circuit drawing from page 118 of Make Electronics shows how a pulsing light can be wired.
What I do NOT know about implementation, and haven't been able to figure out, yet: the photoresistors increase resistance as light gets darker. I've considered some possibilities, but I'm not really satisfied with any of them. It seems like there must be something that I am missing.
IDEA #2
Animals that like to 'flock.' (this one was inspired by Yury's demonstration in class, of a light that likes to be close to another light)
Look and feel: Cute little animals with lights in their eyes, noses and/or tails that get brighter when they near one another.
Role: They are your little buddies, and they remind you that being alone is rarely as much fun as being with friends!
Implementation: This is very simple! Each little animal has its own circuit, with photosensor and LEDs. When the lights get close to one another's sensors, the lights brighten!
The circuit diagram is very basic:
