Hello Class, Week 1 Assignment

Hello everybody.  Welcome to the Computation Major Studio for Spring 2008.   I'm looking forward to meeting you all in person next week. The first week of class I will be out of town unfortunately.  But note, you are still responsible for beginning the reading assignment, purchasing the Required Books [links in sidebar], and turning in any assignments.  Books should be available at campus book store, under this course listing.

I will officially and personally introduce the class, schedule, and material on Jan 29.  Make sure to read all the text below before our next class meeting.  It should address many initial questions that you may have.

You have two assignments this first week.
1) 
Send me an email with responses to the below:*
    +  Your name.
    +  Your background, creatively, professionally, and academically.
    +  List the reasons you decided to take this class.
    +  List what you'd like get out of this class, is you have an idea.
    +  Why did you decided to attend Parsons?
Due: Jan 22nd

2)
Purchase both required books.
Read Chapters 1-5 in Flow
Write 2 paragraphs about for each chapter about an insight the author described that was not obvious to you before reading the book. Email me your writing.
Read The Preface and pages 1-16 in Processing
Due: Jan 28th

Projects and Goals

Projects:
This is a prototype-driven class.  It works under the assumption that "theory comes from doing."   We explore interactive design by creating a series of projects.  We will begin by learning and working closely with the Processing Language to create a series of prototypes.  The mid-term project will be an "interactive-projection-based" installation that meaningfully engages with it's audience.   The final project will be mobile or Internet-based concept and working prototype.  Students will work both in teams and individually to complete projects.

Class Goals:
1)    To work hands-on with and build a common vocabulary for Interactive Installations, Mobile Applications, and Online Experience,
2)   To understand "Audiences" and "Participatory Culture" in relation to new mediums.
3)   To refine presentation and critique skills at the graduate level. To emphasize process and methods
4)   To reinforce rigorous conceptual development and introduce a range of methods for the expression and articulation of ideas through installations, online, and with mobile interfaces.
5)   To explore forms of writing, including but not limited to critical writing, design briefs, self-assessment, personal statements, scenarios, project reviews, blog postings, blog commenting, link sharing, and emerging forms of online participation.
6)   To establish your own voice as a creative author of works including text, performance, toy design, object making, installation design, online discourse, and evaluation.
