of the soundwave graph. The result is a product with dual existence as both a sound and chair, and a new approach to designing products.

User Testing Woes

User testing was a disaster! I couldn't project where I wanted, and then once I found a suitable spot on the 10th floor, I couldn't get the right projector to hang. Without hanging the projector, users will walk through the projection, and it will lose it's passive art-on-the-wall quality. I've considered doing something with a screen, but there are no screens for me to use, at the moment, and I'd have to install the screen in an area that would 1) allow me to bolt a tv to the wall and 2) has an outlet nearby. Wonderful!!!!!

Mini Thesis Stage 4 - Further Prototyping

Hidden versus non-hidden components. The non-hidden components can be used to create a characterization of the instrument. Perhaps an alien-looking creature. The personality added to the item could be a bonus to the concept. See thingamagoop as an example of prior art.

ABOUT: comparison, corrollation, causality

concepts: "the first measured century", tide, consumption and production of cultural artifacts, pop-cultural-heritage.

Current Questions:

1. Effective tools for cause/effect relationships vs. effective tools for contrast

2. Can a trend analyzer determine causality? how? precedents?

3. What are the relationships between a pop cultural artifact(movies) and other aspects of our world?

4. Are movies more than moral indicators of our times? (can they be financial, social, political, natural indicators?) What about other artifects? books?

5. We have just lived through "the first measured century", what does this mean?

6. Does cultural production and cultural consumption trends create a clear cycle?

7. Are relationships enough evidence? can we learn about the data sets used from just comparison? is this a research method?

8. what do these relationships/or lack of say about us?

9. why compare? what type of knowledge do we gain?

10. how can all types of information be scaled to fit for comparisons like this?

1. Can we match one aspect of the developing world's current state with a developed country's past time period? for what? what does this time discrepency mean? example: state of human rights/technology development/cost of living between two countrys. match one and compare the other two.

Day 4: Prototypes

The original idea was to create a scrap-book for New York, a sort of guide book that gives the visitor a glimpse into the experience of being in New York city rather than dry facts. Two precedents related to "experience" were (i) Ben Fry's Zipcode that makes finding locations viz zipcodes/addressed very easy (ii)Million Dollar Blocks by  Columbia'a spatial information design lab that marks out the homes of criminals in New York and correlates the economic condition of the accused, focusing primarily on Brooklyn.

What could I discover about New York?:
: The building on Grove Street where I live was build a hundred years ago.
: The buildings between midtown and downtown remind me of Colaba in Bombay.
: The buildings also enable the neighborhoods to have a sense of warmth, unlike modern structures.
:  The brick path on christopher street has a tile with the name of the family to whom the area belongs.

: Can correlations world over between buildings of similar age and their impact on their city?
: Can they say something about the need for historical conservation efforts?

Magical Mystery Tour : I started to document various places in Flatbush, Crown Heights and Bed Stuy.  This is a map I plan to continually add to.

Brooklyn Historical Society: Lost in transition is a current exhibit at the BHS that is a commentary created by teenagers living in south Brooklyn.  The exhibit displays student work from The Urban  Memory Project , an analysis by Brooklyn youth using photography, sound and video to discuss the changes taking place in their neighborhoods.

Bed-Stuy Restoration Corporation: An organization developed by Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Jacob Javits in 1967.  It's aim is to is "to be the catalyst for the progressive improvement of the quality of life for the people of Bedford Stuyvesant. They carry out this mission through economic, cultural, educational and social ventures that both revitalize the community and serve as pioneering models for distressed communities nationwide."

Gothamist: An organization dedicated to examining and exploring the city's rich history, and to make it more accessible to the community.

Yello Arrow: A project that uses yellow arrow stickers to mark locations in cities all over the world. The yellow arrows provide a link between digital content and real locations.
